What must an SMSF do?

The initial decision is whether the SMSF can and is going to live “off-grid”.

SMSFs can live off grid where

• the SMSF is not going to receive any more contributions (eg SMSF is entirely in pension phase);
• the SMSF is only going to receive member or third party contributions; or
• the only employer contributions the SMSF is going to receive are from standard employer sponsors of the SMSF.

If the SMSF is going to receive employer contributions from employers other than standard employer sponsors, then the SMSF cannot live “off-grid” and must join the SUPERStream system.
