Total Superannuation Assets $1,124b Or 1.3 Wall Street Bailouts
The ATO and APRA have released the following breakdown of assets within the Super sector:
SMSFs | $348b |
Retail | $344b |
Industry | $198b |
Public Sector | $170b |
Corporate | $64b |
Totals based on March 2008 figures.
These figures suggest that the superannuation market will increasingly be divided between SMSFs on the one hand and retail/industry funds on the other hand.
The Corporate sector will continue to decline in size as most employers now regard superannuation as a private matter for their workforce, and are only concerned to ensure that they pay the correct superannuation contribution and obtain a tax deduction for their contribution.
The public sector, while large, reflects the value of assets held in now closed defined benefit schemes which will take 30 or 40 years to run off.
The distinction between industry funds and retail funds will continue to blur as industry funds adopt more retail-fund-like features. However, the marketing point of difference will be “not for profit” mantra and “no adviser fees”.
