Tax-free Super to Go?
30 January 2009
An alarming heading in a leading financial newspaper has appeared, which suggests that the inviolate status of tax free super benefits for post 60 year olds is under threat.
The Government, when it established the Henry Tax Review, in May 2008 ruled out any change to the tax free status of super benefits for post 60 year olds (and an increase in the GST rate).
Now, given the global financial crisis, some commentators have suggested that the Government’s stated intention not to change the tax free status of super benefits for post-60-year-olds should be reviewed and the powers given to the Henry Tax Review should be reconsidered.
We hope this will not eventuate.
