Latest SMSF Data on SMSFs

The ATO has released its SMSF statistical report for March 2009.

Highlights of the report are:

• 406,577 - SMSFs in operation at 31 March 2009
• 782,927 - members participate in SMSFs
• $489,247 - is the average member account balance as at 30 June 2007 (based on data extracted as at July 2008)
• $938,315 - is the average value of assets per SMSF as at 30 June 2007(again based on data extracted as at July 2008).

Geographic location of SMSFs (based on information extracted from the Australian Business Register) as at April 2009 are:

• 37.5% - NSW
• 26.9% - Victoria
• 16.3% - Queensland
• 11.6% - Western Australia
• 6.5% - South Australian/Northern Territory
• 1.1% - Tasmania
