APRA / ATO Statistics

The latest APRA statistics show that super assets totalled $1.84 billion (as at 31 March 2014) which represents a 16.8% increase in the previous 12 months.

The share of super fund assets held in SMSFs has decreased from 31.3% to 30.4% in the 12 month period to 31 March 2014.  In dollar terms, SMSF assets have increased from $492.7 billion to exceed the $500 billion mark at $558.6 billion.

The latest ATO statistics show that there are now in excess of 1 million SMSF members with more than 528,000 SMSFs in existence as at 31 March 2014.

Other key points from the ATO statistics are that 90% of SMSFs are two or single member funds and that 60% of SMSFs are located in NSW or Victoria.

Median assets per SMSF are now $518,000 and median assets per member being $292,000 (in round figures as at 1 July 2012).
