And what are the big taxes?

According to the Henry Tax Review, the big taxes (in order of revenue produced and based on 2006/07 figures) are:

  • personal income tax
  • company tax
  • GST
  • Fuel excises
  • Payroll tax (state)
  • Property transfer taxes (state)
  • Local government taxes (local government)
  • Superannuation funds (ie tax on contributions and earnings)
  • Tobacco excises
  • Land tax (state)

Personal income tax raised $120b, company tax raised $60b, while GST raised slightly more than $40b.  The rest of the taxes raised under $15b each.
